Mouth ulcers are common harmless disease that cause oval sores on the oral cavity. It is largely seen inside portion of the cheeks. Mouth ulcers can cause difficulty in eating and swallowing. It would clear up on its own without any treatment and you can consult a doctor only if it continues to trouble you for a week or more. In medical terms, mouth ulcers are called apthous ulcers and at some point of time, most of us will have it. Women are more prone to develop ulcers on their mouth than men. It is not contagious and hence it does not spread while kissing or sharing glasses with others.

Mouth ulcers will attack people only occasionally but for some people it keeps coming back causing recurrent ulcers. Often it does not require any treatment and only on severe case you can take medications for healing. Maintaining oral hygiene and following good dental health will prevent one from getting mouth ulcers.

Mouth Ulcer Symptoms :

Mouth ulcers appear inside the cheeks or on the roof of oral cavity. It will be round shaped or sometimes oval in shape. A small blister often red in color is seen on the mouth. It can be of yellow or grayish white for some people. It will be warm and the area around the mouth ulcer will be inflamed. Mouth ulcers can commonly occur inside portion of the cheeks, inside the lips, below the tongue and floor of the oral cavity. It might take 10-12 days for healing completely but for some it can lasts for several weeks.

Mouth Ulcer Causes :

Mouth ulcers are often caused due to accidental trauma or injury to the mouth. Some people will accidentally bite the soft membrane of the skin inside the cheeks while eating food. Sometimes your toothbrush can cause injury on the lips or inside of the cheeks causing mouth ulcers. Any sharp object or tooth of part of food items can damage the oral cavity causing mouth ulcers.

Some dental procedures can harm the soft delicate membrane of the mouth causing mouth ulcers. When a person gets stressed or develop anxiety he can get mouth ulcer. Mouth ulcers can commonly occur during or before menstrual period for women due to hormonal changes. It runs on families and more than 40% of the people inherit from their parents. Certain kinds of foods like cheese, chocolates, almonds, peanuts, tomatoes and wheat flour can trigger mouth ulcer.

A person who is on the habit of smoking will get mouth ulcer if he suddenly stopped smoking. This indicates that your body is confronting for the change and it will slowly settle. Individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency are prone to get mouth ulcers. Similarly Crohn’s disease and celiac disease can cause blisters on your mouth.

Medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, nicorandil and beta blockers can occasionally cause mouth ulcers when you initially start taking this drug. Sore throat, herpes infection, skin disease like lichen planus, and gastro intestinal disease like GERD or irritable bowel syndrome can cause ulcers on your mouth rarely.

Tests :

Your doctor will examine your mouth and collect medical history for finding the right cause of mouth ulcer. He may request for blood test, vitamin B12 test and testing for iron deficiency in blood.

Treatment :

No treatment is required for most of the mouth ulcers, since it will heal within a week or so.

  • Mouth Ulcer Home Remedies :

Avoid using toothbrush that contains hard bristles. Avoid taking hard foods and sticky food items. Identify what foods have caused mouth ulcer and try to avoid it in future. In case you are often stressed, practice yoga or meditation to bring down your stress.

  • Medications :

Painkillers like benzydamine can be taken if you have more pain from the ulcers. Over the counter medicines can be used for mouth ulcers without any prescription. In case of mouth infection, use antimicrobial mouthwash like chlorohexidine gluconate with consultation from your dentist. Taking low doses of corticosteroid drugs is helpful for reducing ulcer and managing pain. Hydrocortisone lozenges are available and you can use it 3-4 times a day. Mouth ulcers if left untreated for long can give rise to bacterial infection.

Prevention :

Eat healthy diet and practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth with soft toothbrush and avoid any injury causing foods or objects inside your mouth. Sharp edged teeth can cause injury to your oral cavity and hence you can visit your dentist regularly for having good dental care.
